UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.

24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.

This year's UN Day will be used to highlight concrete actions people can take to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

"Humanity has entered the era of sustainability – with a global commitment to fulfil the great promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this, the Organization’s 71st year, we have 17 goals to propel us towards a better future for all on a healthy planet. " — UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon

Make A Difference Day is one of the largest annual single-days of service nationwide. Tens of thousands of volunteers across the country unite on the fourth Saturday in October with a common mission: to improve the lives of others through a wide range of community-driven service projects.

For more than two decades, Points of Light has partnered with TEGNA, an innovative media company with 46 television stations in 38 markets. Points of Light is once again thrilled to help TEGNA mobilize volunteers and celebrate the power of people to make a difference.

This year, businesses, nonprofit organizations, families, neighbors and individuals will come together to improve their communities on Saturday, October 28. Volunteers are encouraged to register their service project with Make A Difference Day. By doing so, project organizers are eligible to win a $10,000 grant to donate to a charity of their choice.

Your Sophomore Sisters invite you to a special MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY:

Representatives from Café Momentum shared with us the training program they provide to non-violent juvenile offenders.  This includes counseling, mentoring and teaching all skills needed for budgeting, management, food prep and serving

If you wish, you can join us for a meal and help this non-profit with their mission.  They cook fresh, locally sourced, sophisticated American Cuisine.  Please be aware that this is a high-end restaurant and you can spend up to $50.00 per person.  Revenue from the restaurant only covers 30% of their operating costs.

The restaurant will take reservations for 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.  They asked us to have tables of 2,4,6 or 8 people.  Please email your reservation to aimee@cafemomentum.org.  Let Aimee know you are with the Richardson Altrusans.  They will try to seat us at tables near each other.  If you make a reservation through some other method they will not know you are with our group.

While we would like you to register via our web site, you must also register with Aimee to have a dinner reservation.

There is a garage above the restaurant and complementary valet parking.  All you have to do is pull into the garage just past the entrance and the valet is set up there.

BENEFITTING NEEDY SENIORS IN THE DFW AREA

Collection Times at ALL Meetings from September 7 – November 16

We are partnering with Acappella In Home Care on their 4th annual pajama drive to collect pajamas for delivery to low income nursing communities in the DFW area at Christmastime.

Nursing home residents on Medicaid are allotted less than $60 per month to cover needed personal items, such as toiletries, paper products, and clothing. Warm pajamas are considered a luxury, as basic supplies like toothpaste and soap are
    the priority.

“Jo Alch, of Richardson, a Registered Nurse who owns Acappella says “I was a hospice nurse for many years and seeing firsthand the needs of lower income nursing home patients tugged on my heart strings. With such limited resources, some of the residents only have hospital gowns to wear. One of my favorite memories as a child was opening a present from my Grandmother on Christmas Eve, a brand-new nightgown. It was something I looked forward to every year.”

PLEASE NOTE: Linden Park in Richardson is scheduled to receive some of the pajamas along with other nursing facilities in the DFW area outside of Richardson. No Altrusa funds are being used to purchase pajamas. This is strictly a voluntary program for those who wish to participate. You may bring pajamas to any business or program meeting in September, October and November.  Jan Flesch will be collecting the pajamas. The need is for men’s and women’s pajamas, sizes Med – 6X, button up or zip up styles preferred; gowns with long sleeves for ladies; heavier fabrics as distribution will be in December.

For more information on Acappella In Home Care go to www.acappellainhomecare.com.

You can also call Jan Flesch at 972-234-3037 or Alma Benoit at 214-693-3526.

Thank you in advance for your compassion and helping seniors in need!

    Why This International Day?

    • Violence against women is a human rights violation.
    • Violence against women is a consequence of discrimination against women, in law and also in practice, and of persisting inequalities between men and women.
    • Violence against women impacts on, and impedes, progress in many areas, including poverty eradication, combating HIV/AIDS, and peace and security.
    • Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. Prevention is possible and essential.
    • Violence against women continues to be a global pandemic.

One of the major challenges to efforts to prevent and end violence against women and girls worldwide is the substantial funding shortfall. As a result, resources for initiatives to prevent and end violence against women and girls are severely lacking. Frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals, which includes a specific target on ending violence against women and girls, offer huge promise, but must be adequately funded in order to bring real and significant changes in the lives of women and girls.

From 25 November through 10 December, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence aim to raise public awareness and mobilizing people everywhere to bring about change. This year, the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign invites you to “Orange the world,” using the colour designated by the UNiTE campaign to symbolize a brighter future without violence. Organize events to orange streets, schools and landmarks!

"Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation, public health pandemic and serious obstacle to sustainable development. It imposes large-scale costs on families, communities and economies. The world cannot afford to pay this price." — Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General

Please celebrate Vera's birthday with us on February 24, 2018 at 1:30 p.m.

We invite all new members to visit at least one of the six birthday parties the Ability House Committee holds each year.

    For new members:

Ability House is a home for six adults with Cerebral Palsy. It is supported by Ability Connection Texas (ACT). We adopted Ability House in 1995. In 2005, our club was selected as the UCPDallas Volunteer Organization of Year.

Altrusans visit the residents of Ability House to celebrate birthdays and holidays. The birthday parties are usually conducted on a Saturday afternoon. Volunteers bring cake, beverages and a gift from the club. Residents enjoy our company and all members are encouraged to attend. Terrace Elementary students have also been known to make birthday cards for the residents.
